It is hard to believe it has been 50 years since the Tate-Labianca murders in Los Angeles
August 8-9, 1969. Actress Sharon Tate, house guests ex-boyfriend hair stylist to
the stars Jay Sebring, coffee heiress Abigail Folger, her boyfriend Voytek Frykowski , and Steven
Parent were murdered around midnight during the 8th-9th . Businessman Leno and wife Rosemary Labianca were
murdered the night of the 9th. The only survivor was 19 year old William Garretson who
lived in the guest house on the estate director Roman Polanski and wife Sharon Tate were
renting at 10050 Cielo Drive. The killers did not notice he was inside.
Garretson , a drifter from Ohio, was described in the media as the caretaker but
was most likely the boy toy of the estate owner, Rudi Altobelli, a middle aged gay man and
talent agent. He had picked up Garretson, a "well endowed" and buff former high school wrestler,
hitchhiking in the Sunset Boulevard area and moved him into the guest house which
was Altobelli's personal residence. He rented out the big house to celebrities. He and Garretson
apparently lived together for several months before Altobelli took a business trip to Europe and was still
there at the time of the murders..
Garretson's duties were feeding the dogs. Other than that he slept till 1:00 pm, worked on his
tan, and hung out around Hollywood hitching rides . He had hitched a ride
with Steve Parent in the past and invited him to drop by the estate. Steve picked the wrong
night and was shot to death by the Manson gang as he was driving out of the estate gate
after a short visit with Garretson.
