Tragedy in Western Canada: A bus carrying a junior hockey team collided with a semi-trailer on Friday evening, leaving 14 dead and the remaining 14 injured, three of them critically.

The Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League were traveling to the town of Nipawin for a playoff game when the semi T-boned the bus, the AP reports.

"It's a horrible accident, my God," says the president of the Nipawin Hawks. "It's very, very bad." Rescue efforts continued into the evening as air ambulances took survivors to regional hospitals and a crane was seen lifting the bus, the Globe and Mail and Saskatoon Star-Phoenix report.

Meanwhile people gathered in a hockey arena in Humboldt, where sobs broke out as phone calls came in with news about loved ones and friends.
Others gathered at the Apostolic Church in Nipawin to await news: "Some of the families have gotten information and have gone to be with their kids," says the church pastor.

"Some of them are waiting to hear if their kids are alive." As condolences came in from politicians, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, memories were kindled of a Saskatchewan bus crash that killed four members Swift Current Broncos in 1986.

"It's disbelief. It's shock," says the Humboldt Broncos president of the Friday crash. "The deepest grief that you can ever imagine."

Definitely a sad day for the Canadian Junior Hockey League as well as at the National Hockey League.

"The bus was transporting members of the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League to a match in the town of Nipawin when it crashed en route.

The team was some 18 miles north of the town of Tisdale when the collision happened at around 5 p.m. local time (7 p.m. EST) Friday. Royal Canadian Mounted Police assistant commissioner Curtis Zablocki said a tractor trailer traveling west collided with the bus."

The death toll has now risen to 15 with another player who was travelling on the bus dying from his injuries.

Most of the players are from Saskatchewan and Alberta. In a province as spread out as Saskatchewan, teams often travel three or more hours in brutal winter conditions to get to the rink, where 5,000 fervid fans can show up in towns with populations just over double that.

A GoFundMe page created by a Humboldt resident quickly became the most successful Canadian campaign ever on the online fundraising site and among the Top 10 globally.

By Saturday afternoon [April 7], tens of thousands of people had donated more than $2.5-million. That included a number of large donations, such as $10,000 each from the Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs."

    Images related to the crash.

    1. The bus was only about a 1/2 hour from Nipawin.

    4. Circled in red, is where the front end of the bus ended up.

    6. I've circled the names of those confirmed dead in the crash. Three others are not in this photo.

    9. I've added indicators to show which direction each vehicle was travelling in.

Everyone's thinking the same thing. The truck would have reached a stop sign while the bus had the right of way.

Just conjecture, but that semi and bus must have been doing a good clip when it [the bus] t-boned the trailer of the truck. Further conjecture is something that the cops are looking at: that corner-row of trees perhaps hindering the truck driver's sight when checking that part of the highway before crossing the intersection.

That truck was huge, atleast 135,000 tonnes once loaded and coming to an intersection at something like 80k's after slowing down from 100k or so probably didn't want to come to a complete stop and then fire 'er all up again.

I should note, my apologies, the bus t-boned the truck...not the other way around as I indicated.

This is pretty close to my own back yard... awful to be sure, but it is nice to see people come together in a time of tragedy to lend support to one another.
